Hell – Did Jesus go to Hell? Did Jesus go to Hell after He died? Yup! Jesus went to Hell; Sheol/Hades. It’s the place everyone went after death. Abraham (Luke 16:22-26), David (Psalms 16:10 & Acts 2:27), and all of the righteous dead went there. It’s not that He was taken to Hell or that He fought Satan in Hell. Satan has never been in Hell, but will be in Revelation times. Jesus called Hell “the Heart of the earth” that He would spend 3 days and nights in (Matt 12:40). It’s also called “the lower parts of the earth” (Eph 4:9). Did Jesus burn in Hell? No! Jesus told the thief who was dying with Him, “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:46). How can Jesus be in both paradise and Hell? It’s because paradise was in Hell. I know that sounds like 2 opposite ideas, but Hell (which is Sheol in Hebrew and Hades in Greek) had at least 2 compartments. There was a place for the righteous and a place for the wicked. Born Sinners: Are We Born Into Sin? We are not born as sinners. Sin is lawlessness (1John 3:4), “All unrighteousness is sin…” (1John 5:17). Sin is an action; all sin is committed. Infant children have done nothing lawless or unrighteous. There are 2 reasons why people believe that we are born are sinners: Psalms 51:5 – “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.” Exodus 20:5 – “For I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.” Shapen in Iniquity – In Sin Did My Mother Conceive Me Psalms 51 is David’s Psalm of confession after he had Bathsheba’s husband killed and committed adultery with her. Sovereignty – Limitations of God The majority of Christians today believe a doctrine that says God either causes or allows tragedy in His children’s lives. Their definition of “sovereign” is that God is in control of everything, everywhere, all the time. That doctrine also says that nothing happens without God willing it to happen. This sounds good, but it is the reason why many people secretly hate God. Let’s say that a man had a son who contracted cancer and died after many years of suffering. The man is told that “God is in control”, “nothing happens outside of God’s plan, therefore this was God’s plan”, and the preacher at his son’s funeral even says “God took the child”. I’m sure you can understand the resentment and emotional confusion that the man has towards God. Yet, the man knows that if he hates God, he will go to Hell. No Christian wants to hate or resent...
